Statewide Special Election - November 4, 2025 -- for voting info click on the website's Voting/Upcoming Election tab
This “special election” is for California Voters to decide whether to temporarily change California’s Congressional voting districts through 2030 and then give map-drawing back to the Citizens Redistricting Commission in 2031. Voters will also decide on whether the state should encourage the use of independent commissions to draw voting maps across the U.S.A.  You can find the new and old map at bit.ly/Prop50Maps (https://bit.ly/Prop50Maps).

WHY ARE WE HAVING A SPECIAL ELECTION?
President Trump asked Texas to redraw congressional districts to help Republicans, so Governor Newsom asked the California Legislature to do the same for Democrats. In this special election, voters will decide if California can use these new maps for all congressional elections through 2030.

HOW YOU’RE REPRESENTED IN CONGRESS (U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES)

California has 52 members in the U.S. House of Representatives. They are each elected for a two-year term. Each member represents the people from their district in Washington, D.C. They help develop the federal budget and U.S. policy priorities, and work with other U.S. Representatives to make new laws.

Staying True to Nonpartisanship

At our core, nonpartisanship is not just a policy — it’s a bedrock principle that defines who we are at the League of Women Voters.  As a membership organization committed to empowering voters and defending democracy, we do not support or oppose political parties or candidates.  Once individuals are elected, they are no longer just candidates — they are public servants, responsible for representing all their constituents, regardless of party.  Holding elected officials accountable to the public interest is not a partisan act; it is a vital function of a healthy democracy.  When we advocate for or against policies based on our mission and values, we do so from our commitment to issues and strengthening civil institutions, not out of allegiance to any political party.  Go here for more information on the League's non-partisanship position Staying True to Nonpartisanship in a Divisive Political Climate

UniteAndRise

What is Unite and Rise 8.5?

The LWV US deems our country to be in a constitutional crisis, due to the Trump administration’s repeated attacks on our democratic systems and Congress’s failure to intervene. The LWV believes that 8.5 million individuals could bring about change by nonviolent action. That’s about 3.5% of eligible US voters.

To help protect our democracy, you can join forces with the LWV, tell your representatives to support the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, turn up the heat on elected officials at town halls, demand due process for ICE detainees, and participate in your local league’s efforts in your community.
