Grace Peng's husband runs the nonfiction book club for Manhattan Beach's independent bookstore. They decided they really, really wanted to read Empire of AI by Karen Hao.
Grace Peng (head of the Water & Infrastructure Group) writes:
Karen Hao was a business reporter for MIT Technology Review and a Technology reporter for WSJ.
She does an excellent job of explaining both the techniques and the business imperatives of AI engagingly and in an accessible way. No equations, no math required (but, her verbal descriptions line up accurately with what I learned in a math class I took in grad school.) That's masterful writing.

I just finished the chapter about AI data centers and water.
Google proposed a datacenter in Chile that would use 169 liters of water per second for cooling, tapping the municipal aquifer for Cerrillos, Chile. That data center would have used 1,000x the water that the entire 88,000 residents use per annum.
This book is of interest to LWV members because some popular uses of AI undermine democracy, and the environmental costs are astronomical.
I cannot recommend the book enough.
